Use this search strategy to locate credible information on this topic:

Begin your search by opening the Advanced Search link within the Library OneSearch box, which you will see once you are within the UAGC Library. This will search most of the library's collection in a single search. Additionally, the advanced search option will provide you with three separate search boxes to enter your search terms.

Once on the Advanced Search page, enter key terms to get the most useful sources on the topic. Enter one key term per box.

Given the topic, key terms may include minimum wage increase, impact or effect or influence, economy or economic impact or fiscal impact, as shown in the image below.

You can then scroll down to the Filters section and select the "Limit to Scholarly/Peer Reviewed" filter to only display scholarly, peer-reviewed sources if your assignment requires that you use scholarly/peer-reviewed sources. If you can use credible sources, do not check the limit to scholarly/peer-reviewed box. You can also use the filters to limit to a certain publication date, such as the past 5 years. Always make sure to limit to Full Text. Then select search.

As you go through your search results, you'll see your search terms highlighted or bolded in the titles and descriptions of the articles.

Want to narrow your search?

Access the subjects filter box by selecting the All Filters button beneath the search box. The filters menu will appear on the right side of the page. Scroll down and select Subjects. This tool can be another great place to narrow your results or find additional ideas for keywords for which you may want to search. Select the more link to see more subject keywords in your results and select a few if you'd like to narrow your results.

Another great place to look for additional search terms to help you narrow your results is the Subjects section available with most articles listed in the search results. You can copy and paste any one of these search terms into one of the three search boxes or add a box to see how this impacts your results.

Here are a few more tips to help your research:

  • Go through the first page or two of your search results. If you do not find a resource that will work for you, revise your search.

  • You should use quotations when searching for multiple words in one phrase, like "cost of living". This tells the database you want only results with those words appearing next to each other in that specific order.

  • You can search for different words that refer to similar things by using OR, and this will give you more results.  For example, you could search for economy or economic impact or fiscal impact in one search box, and the database will find any articles with any of those phrases.
