CQ Researcher
The CQ Researcher database contains in-depth and unbiased reports on current issues such as health care, education, and the economy. Written by experienced journalists, this credible source includes a Pro/Con section where two experts present an argument for and against an issue. You can access this resource by taking the steps outlined in the How do I find the CQ Researcher Database? quick answer.
Once you have accessed CQ Researcher and chosen a report, select the Pro/Con link in the On this page box in the right portion of the screen.
For additional assistance using the CQ Researcher database see the CQ Researcher Guide.
***Note that the reports in CQ Researcher are considered credible but not scholarly sources since they are written by journalists rather than experts on the topic. To locate scholarly resources that discuss a topic's pros and cons, take the following steps:
Library OneSearch
Begin your search by selecting the Library OneSearch advanced search option. Not only does this database search most of the library's databases at once, it also provides you with three separate boxes to enter your keywords.
Enter the concepts you want to search for into the advanced search boxes, using one concept per box. In the first box, type the topic you are hoping to find information on. For this example, we'll use "rent control." In the second box, rather than using words like pro and con, which are generally not used in scholarly articles, you'll want to use words like benefits or positive effects or advantages for pro and challenges or barriers or difficulties for con.
You can then scroll down the page to the Filters section and select the Limit to Scholarly/Peer Reviewed box to only display scholarly, peer reviewed sources. You can use the other limiters, such as Publication Date, to further limit your results to be more current and relevant to your needs. Then select apply before selecting search.
