Field searching is a tool that tells a database to search for keywords in a specific category or "field." These fields can vary by database, but generally consist of the following categories:

  • Author
  • Title
  • Journal Title
  • Subject Terms
  • ISBN or ISSN

This type of searching can come in handy when you are looking for works by a specific author, know the title of the article you need, or want to find information on a particular subject.

To find the field search options, open up an advanced search in any database, and look for the drop-down menu next to the search box.
