Why can't I get the article to come up?
Many people try to find an article by copying and pasting an entire citation into the search box. This does not work because there are many citation styles and the database may have the information entered in a different way.
There are several methods you can use to find an article with a citation. This brief tutorial will show you how:
How to search
Here is an example citation:
Quinonez, S. C., Stewart, D. A., & Banovic, N. (2024). ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence in Graduate Medical Education Program Applications. Journal of Graduate Medical Education, 16(4), 391–394. https://doi.org/10.4300/JGME-D-23-00823.1
Search by title
Enter the title or a portion of the title into the Library OneSearch box. Then select search.
Still unable to locate the article by searching the title?
You can also use the journal information provided in the citation to track down the article published in the journal. You can use the steps outlined in the example below and apply them to your citation.
First, you will want to locate the journal title. In APA formatting, the journal title is the italicized portion of the citation. In the above example, the journal title is the Journal of Graduate Medical Education.
Once you locate the journal title, select the Journal Titles tab underneath the Library OneSearch box on the library homepage. Then copy the journal title from your citation or type it into the search box:
You will then be brought to the search results page, where you will click on the title of the journal. Depending on the journal, there will be either one or two options available to access articles published in the journal.
Search within the publication
Some journals offer the option to Search within the Publication. To use this option, select the database that you would like to access the journal through. Then copy and paste or type in part of the title of the article you are looking. Select the magnifying glass next to the search box to run the search. The article you are looking for should be retrieved.
Accessing by issue number or date
All journals should include the option to find the article using a Full Text Access link. Selecting this link will bring up a list of databases that carry that journal, as well as the years of coverage for the journal publication. Selecting a database link from the list will bring you to a page with links to each year of coverage. Select the year of publication listed in the citation, then select the link to the Volume and Issue.
Embargo Restrictions
Sometimes journals in the collection will have embargo restrictions placed on them. These restrictions will prevent you from accessing the current year to 18 months of a publication. The link to the journal will state that there is a delay.
If the article that you wish to access falls within this embargo, you can always request the desired article through our interlibrary loan (ILL) system. Requests can take anywhere from 3 business days or longer so if you need the article sooner than that you may want to find an alternative source. Here are some resources to assist you with Creating an ILL Account and Putting in an ILL Request.
