Dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other reference books are great resources that can help you better understand a topic and are excellent for those needing to do some background research. For more information about background research see the Background Research tip sheet

To locate dictionaries or encyclopedias in the library:

1. Click on the Encyclopedias & Dictionaries button on the library homepage.

Yellow box around the Encyclopedias & Dictionaries button on the library homepage.

2. You will see a list of encyclopedias, dictionaries, and reference databases. Spend a few moments reading the descriptions of each database, as they will give you a good indication of which one has the types of information you need.

Important Note about dictionaries and encyclopedias

Keep in mind that these types of sources are not considered appropriate for college-level research, and will most likely not be counted as one of your required sources if they are included in your paper.
