There are several methods you can use to find an article with a citation. This brief tutorial can show you how:
Methods for locating your article
You can use the steps outlined in the examples below and apply them to the citation you have.
Here is an example citation:
Lewis, C. (2024). Transforming Higher Education The Rise of AI in Academia. Dental Health, 63(3), 5.
Library OneSearch
1. Enter the title into the basic search box and select search.
2. If that does not work and you have too many or no results, use the Advanced Search feature (available by selecting the link just below the basic search box).
3. In the first box, enter a few words from the title and change the drop-down menu to the right of that box to Title TI. In the second box, enter the last name of the author and change the drop-down menu to the right of that box to Author AU. Then select the Search button.
By Journal
When you are looking for a specific article, you can use the journal information provided in the citation to track down the article in the journal that published it.
You will want to locate the journal title. This can be found in the italicized portion of the citation, in APA format. In the above example, the journal title is the Dental Health.
1. Select the Journal Titles tab, found underneath the Library OneSearch box on the library homepage. You can then copy the journal title from your citation or type it into the search box.
2. You will then be brought to the search results page, where you will select the title of the journal. There will be either one or two options available to access articles published in the journal, depending on the journal.
3. Once you have accessed the journal you will need to locate the article. You can do this by either searching for the article's title or locating the specific volume/issue of the journal in which the article is located. The volume/issue information is available within the citation. For this particular example, the volume is 63 and the issue is 3.
Finding my article
Some journals offer the option to Search within Publication. To use this option:
1. Once you have accessed the journal, scroll down and locate the search within this publication box.
2. Type the title of the article into the search box then select the magnifying glass hovering over the piece of paper to search.
Embargo Restrictions
Sometimes journals in the collection will have embargo restrictions placed on them. These restrictions will prevent you from accessing the current year to 18 months of a publication. The link to the journal will state that there is a delay.
If the article that you wish to access falls within this embargo, you can always request the desired article through our interlibrary loan (ILL) system. Requests can take anywhere from 3 business days or longer so if you need the article sooner than that you may want to find an alternative source.
